Coach's Corner

Review 38 @ Stop 46
Coach’s Corner
317 E. 6th Street (Newport)

Since several readers brought it to our attention, the Burger Guys visited Coach’s Corner, located just down the street from Pompilio’s. The building with the Hudy sign makes it look like a bar, and once inside, it is a bar. The small, narrow, dark room with a wooden backbar greets visitors, who may mosey back to a small dining area decorated with beer signs.

Being a bar has advantages and disadvantages. Friendly servers and reasonable prices are common. On the other hand, especially for Ohioans, smoking is permitted. No doubt, Coach’s Corner is typical.

The hamburger/cheeseburger ($3.25) is topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and pickles, plus served a pickle spear and chips. Add a soft drink, and get a $4.74 bill. The menu also offers 3 specialty burgers. The Coach’s Choice ($3.75) is a cheeseburger topped with ham and a special seasoning.

Bucky, Freddie, and Wolfy each ordered the hamburger. Served on a toasted, regular bun, the third-pound patties are medium sized. Interestingly, the kitchen provided burgers that the Burger Guys could different by cooking levels – typically, a difficult achievement with medium-sized patties. Yes, even Wolfy was happy with his medium rare.

The patties were moist accompanied with drippings to the plate. Although no additional seasonings were detected, the sandwich provided a balance of flavors.

This day provided one of those rare events. The first bite pleased each member of the trio – plus each keep smiling throughout the time. Good burger at a great price – but for those whom smoking bothers, call ahead for a carryout order.

PS: Thanks Dave for the recommendation!
